The universe has spoken ...I shall be a Consultant!!! The cherry on top of the month of September came in the form of my team, Imperial Consultants where I was the group leader, winning the overall UP Consulting Case Competition. The event was in association with quite a few reputable consulting firms namely:
I was selected as a regional judge for the Eskom Young Scientist Expo. It was a completely awe-inspiring and phenomenal event filled with amazing inventions and re-engineered experiments and experiments by the brightest in the land.
Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is an exposition, or science fair, where high school students have a chance to show others their projects about their own scientific investigations. At Expo, students can discuss their work with judges, teachers and students from other schools, with parents and with other interested people. By participating at expo students will increase their awareness of the wonders of science, add to their knowledge and broaden their scientific horizons. Their mission is to develop young scientists who are able to identify a problem, analyse information, find solutions and communicate findings effectively. To learn more visit: ExpoScientist Christine Abernathy is a Developer Advocate on the Open Source team at Facebook. She has previous Developer Advocacy roles with Parse and Facebook Platform. She has a passion for developers and mobile technologies, especially iOS and Android. Prior to Facebook, Christine headed up engineering at Mshift, a mobile banking software provider, delivering iOS apps and mobile browser-based products. Minaz Mushi (fellow University of Pretoria engineering student) and I had the privilege to have a one-on-one two hour conversation along with Christine along with the equally highly accomplished and awesome host Hema Vallabh (WomEng director and mentor).
A fun day of #girlpower , motivation and networking with fellow nominees. Thankful for the nomination. #ilooklikeanEngineer
How are we engineering our energy needs on the continent? The @Network Division of Women in Engineering (WomEng) hosted a networking event on Tuesday, 2 September 2014, at the Wanderers Cricket Stadium in Johannesburg. Energy is and shall remain a key discussion as we develop Africa – hence the theme of the evening entitled “Energy Africa”. With rising energy demands and costs, a continent rich in oil and gas, but also sunshine, wind and water, key decisions need to be made in terms of our energy future. Energy Africa marked the third instalment of WomEng’s Thought Leadership series on Africa. The event featured a panel of expert thought leaders as well as an audience of students and professionals from various fields and sectors across South Africa. Introduction of renewable energy in rural areas, the role of Foreign Direct investment in Africa, fracking and skill development amongst our youth were some of the topics explored during the panel discussion. The evident conclusion is that Africa is in need of a “new way of thinking”. The speakers challenged the youth to be these “new-thinkers”. The youth should be at the fore-front in decision making with regards to energy because decisions made today will shape their futures and their children’s futures. In 2013 and 2014 I got to attend and blog about pivotal and relevant events, conferences and workshops that are helping shape engineers and the engineering field!
Drawing up a 2015 calender of events of conferences, workshops & summits to attend & blog about! Events such as the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists where I will be acting as a judge that I’m looking forward to attending & blogging about! Do you know of an event or have an event you'd like me to review & blog about? Contact me and let's make it happen! Check out all the events I blogged about right here in 2013!!! I will be uploading posts about the following events I attended as a blogger and a participant:
A hearty special thank you to the Exxaro representatives Mr Stephen Gans and Dr Nanne Vegter. Their genuine passion offered us a rare insight into the world of Exxaro and the opportunities offered to students and graduates. The presentation was informative, enlightening and enjoyed by all. "Happy 90nth anniversary to Eskom! Celebrating Women in Science and Engineering...'Wathint' umfazi, wathint' imbokodo!' " Say hello to Rozina Myoya! Fellow engineering blogger. We partnered up and together we reviewed the 90th anniversary of Eskom celebrating Women in Science and Egineering! On the 7th of September 2013, the Minister of Public Enterprises of South Africa, Malusi Gigaba, Eskom Chairman Zola Tsotsi and Eskom Chief Executive Officer, Brian Dames marked Eskom's 90th anniversary by hosting an event aimed at celebrating the participation of women in the science and engineering fields at Eskom's Megawatt Park offices in Gauteng South Africa. What was the event about? The event formed part of Eskom’s 90th anniversary celebrations and served as a platform to acknowledge the significance of women in the Science and Engineering professions. The event is one of several lined up to mark Eskom’s nine decades of community development and empowerment and will be celebrated in all nine provinces. Emphasizing the special role women play in the company and within society at large, the event was graced by women in the science and engineering fields at various state-owned companies, top performing girls from Eskom’s adopted schools, and top performing female Further Education and Training (FET) students from Gauteng. Awarding excellence During the event, certificates were handed over to top learners in last year’s Grade 12, who did very well in Maths and Science. Miss Thami Ngubeni was the event's MC and truly made the event spectacular. She is the CEO of Thamzin Media. Amongst many of her accolades she is also a well-renowned author and public figure with a passion for economic empowerment. A leader in her own right, she brought up an interesting point when she raised the issue of 'the responsibility of achievement'. When you succeed in something, with that success comes an extraordinary responsibilty to pay it forward. Food for thought indeed! “World problems do not require engineers and scientists who think about problems linearly but they require holistic approaches. Creating designs and engaging in community development should just be as relevant to engineers and scientists as Maths and Science are!” -Mr Zola Tsotsi Mr Tsotsi is a qualified Chemical Engineering (a small snippet of his education background). He is the Chairman of Eskom Holdings SOC Limited serves on the company's board of directors. Guest speaker Mr Monwabisi Kalawe, CEO of South African Airways emphasized the opportunities available in the science and engineering fields and the need for excellence and innovation in these fields. SA Express CEO, Inati Ntshanga, noted that whilst there’s an improvement within the field of science and engineering, women are still under represented and this must change. |
